Romanian senator investigated in new influence peddling case

26 November 2015

Romania’s anticorruption prosecutors are investigating senator Dan Sova, a former minister in Victor Ponta’s cabinet, in a new case related to legal assistance contracts his firm got from the state-owned thermal power plant CET Govora.

The company took a damage of over EUR 1 million from these contracts.

According to DNA, Dan Sova determined Mihai Balan, CET Govora’s general director and Constantin Lapadat, the economic director, to sign two legal assistance contracts with his law firm, Sova&Asociatii, in terms imposed by him, with the breach of their duties and of the law on public procurement.

A few days ago, the DNA prosecutors have asked the Parliament for the approval to detain and arrest Sova in another case also targeting a legal assistance contract awarded by CET Govora. According to the prosecutors, Sova allegedly brokered a legal assistance deal of EUR 10,000 per month between the state-owned thermal power plant and a private law firm, according to prosecutors. He received EUR 100,000 from the law firm for his services between October 2011 and July 2014.

On Tuesday, the Senate’s Judiciary Committee approved the request of the DNA to detain and arrest Dan Sova, but the Senate still needed to vote on this.
