Romania’s Directorate for Investigating Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) registered more terrorism cases last year when compared to 2014, according to the institution’s report for 2015.

Last year, DIICOT solved 36 cases, from a total of 74. The number is 16% higher than the one registered in 2014 when the prosecutors finalized 31 cases, reports local Mediafax.

“Romania, from its position at the European Union's external border, faces more complex and atypical threats,” Eduard Hellvig, the head of the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI), said at the presentation of DIICOT’s report for 2015.

According to him, the terrorism, illegal migration, cybercrime, radicalization, drug trafficking and other organized crime networks have reached alarming levels, forcing the authorities to adapt more quickly and have a fast response.

Three times more Romanians reported possible terrorist activities in 2015.
