Romanian prosecutors reject former Finance Minister guilt recognition deal

01 April 2015

Former Finance Minister Darius Valcov was willing to sign an agreement with the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA), recognizing guilt in the bribery and influence peddling case, in exchange for a lighter punishment.

The case prosecutor however declined the proposal, according to judicial sources, cited by local Mediafax.

DNA prosecuted Valcov for alleged bribery and influence peddling while he was mayor of Slatina. The prosecutors also argued that Valcov continued his illegal activities after he became senator and Finance Minister.

The former Minister came on March 31 again at the DNA offices for statements, when he also proposed the deal.

The prosecutor didn’t consider that the guilt recognition deal, featured in the Criminal Code could be applied in Valcov’s case. It could apply only to cases resulting in a fine or in a light sentence, below seven years in jail.
