Romanian president: Time has come for a woman to run for presidency; Elena Udrea was a 'won bet'

19 June 2013

The time has come for a women candidate to run for Romania's presidency, said incumbent Romanian president Traian Basescu, who added several women politicians have attracted press and voters. He mentioned former Tourism Minister Elena Udrea (in picture) from the Democratic Liberal Party PDL, whom he also supported in the race for the PDL presidency, but who lost to Vasile Blaga.

The president's comments came at a debate about the role of women, and he mentioned two other women oliticians, Sulfina Barbu and Anca Boagiu. About Elena Udrea, the Romanian politician who attracted both good and bad press in time, he said she is a 'fashionable and serious politician'.

“Those who had a profession, who had went to a good university, who understood how things work, they will succeed. Now it depends on how high everyone raises their bar. Anyhow, I think the time will soon come for a woman to run for presidency in Romania,” said Basescu, who added that there are already several women with certain experience in politics and who are among the top 20 politicians in Romania. “I would be happy to support a woman for President or for Prime Minister,” Basescu added.

When further talking about Elena Udrea, he said she was "a winning bet, which was then followed by many other politicians and parties.” He concluded saying women are more honest and more loyal than men in politics.

According to pundits, Udrea could become a potential candidate to Romania's presidency in the race next year, with the then former president Basescu as supporter, and that her recent divorce from businessman Dorin Cocos could be part of the campaign preparing her for the presidential race.
