Romanian Copyright Office destroys 160,000 pirated products in public event to discourage piracy

30 April 2014

As many as 160,000 pirated products were destroyed in a public event organized yesterday in Bucharest by the Romanian Copyright Office (ORDA). These included CDs, DVDs, video and audio tapes, hard disks and memory sticks confiscated in 650 finalized cases of piracy, and containing pirated music, films and software.

Every year, following ORDA’s notifications, the Police investigate more than 100 illegal music studios and retail outlets, according to Agerpres. The Office itself checks over 15,000 pirated products a year in the music segment only.

The annual damage raises to some EUR 180,000, and a very small amount – 3 percent – is usually recovered. The public events where pirated products are destroyed are meant to discourage piracy.
