Romanian cities Sibiu and Brasov to upgrade water, heating systems with EBRD money

06 September 2011

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is considering a loan of up to EUR 17.6 million for the upgrade and extension of the water and wastewater infrastructure in the city of Sibiu in Romania. A second pending loan, worth some EUR 12 million, could be directed to the rehabilitation and modernisation of the district heating network in the Romanian city of Brasov.

The first loan, which would be granted to S.C. Apa-Canal Sibiu, will be used as part of a wider project, with costs raising up to EUR 131.7 million. Additional funds for this project will come from the European Union, the Government of Romania and the local governments under Romania’s Cohesion Fund Programme.

The second EBRD loan, granted to Tetkron, will contribute to a project with an estimated cost of EUR 15.2 million. Tetkron was created in August 2010 and currently distributes heat to 17,000 residential customers in Brasov under a 20-year operating lease contract with the city. The Municipality directly owns 98 percent of the company and 2 percent through its subsidiary RIAL, a company managing the public patrimony on behalf of the Brasov city.
