Romanian businessman Tiriac to invest EUR 3 mln in Olympic skating rink in Bucharest

Romanian businessman and former tennis player Ion Tiriac recently said that he will get involved in the construction of an Olympic skating rink in Bucharest, and plans to invest EUR 3 million in this project.

This week, Tiriac has scheduled a meeting with representatives of the Bucharest Municipality to discuss details related to the construction of the skating ring, reports local daily Gandul.info.

This announcement comes two weeks after the Romanian businessman said he will donate USD 100 million for the establishment of a Romanian sport foundation.

Also, in late January, Tiriac donated an aircraft to the state, for emergency humanitarian missions. The donation came after a lengthy mission to save seven survivors of a plane crash in Romania involving an old aircraft.

Ion Tiriac, a former tennis player, is one of Romania’s richest entrepreneurs. He controls the car importers for Jaguar, Land Rover, Range Rover, Hyundai, and also sells Ford and Mercedes Benz through its Tiriac Auto centers in Romania. His holding runs real estate, insurance and car dealership businesses. In 2013, Tiriac was elected into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Bucharest’s main skating rink will not be re-opened as planned, and the authorities are currently in talks with businessman Ion Tiriac to build a new skating rink elsewhere, until the existing one will be demolished and rebuilt.
