Romanian businessman arrested after breaking judicial control terms

13 May 2015

Romania’s High Court ruled in favor of the anticorruption prosecutors’ request to arrest Ilie Carabulea, one of Romania’s richest, after he broke the terms of the judicial control.

Carabulea, who owns local bank Banca Carpatica, insurance company Carpatica Asig and transport company Atlassib, was first arrested in January 2014 because he had tried to delay the Financial Supervisory Authority’s controls on his insurance company, in 2013.

Several other people were also arrested in this case, including ASF’s former president Dan Radu Rusanu.

Carabulea was released from jail and placed under home arrest seven months later.

In February 2015, the prosecutors sent Carabulea’s case to court and placed him under judicial control. This meant he was allowed to leave his house, but had to report to the police regularly and was not allowed to meet and talk to other people involved in his case.

Prosecutors found that he failed to respect the terms of his release, as he contacted several witnesses and installed a surveillance system at Carpatica Asig’s headquarters that sent a video stream to his home.
