Romanian anticorruption prosecutors detain hard-to-get senator

04 December 2015

Anticorruption prosecutors detained the Romanian senator Dan Sova on December 3, accusing him of taking a EUR 100,000 bribe to secure an agreement between the state-owned thermal power plant CET Govora and a law firm.

Sova was questioned by the National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) in the afternoon, after the Senate had approved DNA’s request to detain and arrest him.

DNA also requested the Senate’s approval to arrest Sova in March and in June this year, in another case, but fellows MPs protected him and refused to accept DNA’s demands. That case targeted several legal assistance contracts between electricity producer Complexul Energetic Oltenia and Sova’s law firm.

The former Prime Minister Victor Ponta, who had collaborated with Sova’s law firm for a while, was also indicted by DNA in that case.
