Romania plans comprehensive revision of corporate taxation system

19 December 2018

Romania’s Government plans to endorse on December 19 an emergency ordinance that operates comprehensive revision of the entire corporate taxation system, with no prior public consultations, MP and prominent leader of the main opposition party - National Liberal Party (PNL) Florin Catu claims in a Facebook post.

The ordinance reportedly sets new taxes for the retail, energy, banking and gambling sectors, among others, Catu claims, according to local Adevarul. These are mainly the sectors envisaged by the ruling coalition leader Liviu Dragnea in his aggressive nationalist speech held on Sunday, December 16 against the multinational companies.

As regards the Government’s plans for a turnover tax to be levied on companies in the energy sector, state secretary Doru Visan said that he is not aware of such a draft, according to Economica.net. A major association of investors in the energy sector (ACUE) already protested to the rumours about such a turnover tax, hinted by Dragnea as a response to the companies’ transfer pricing policies that result in small if any profit tax paid to Romania’s budget by multinational companies.
