The largest energy consumption in 2013 was recorded around a week ago, and stood at some 7,300 MW, according to Constantin Niță, the ministry delegate for energy.

However, explaining the wider connotations of energy consumption figures, Niță said the broad picture wasn't great for Romania.

“Unfortunately in Romania the closure of many factories and the drop in population consumption can be felt. It is a low consumption compared to other states, such as Turkey, which has a 7-8 percent increase and where the energy needs are high,” he said.

He did not explain what caused the peak in energy consumption, recorded a week ago.

The electricity production in Romania went down by 7.2 percent in the first seven months of 2013, while the consumption was also down 7.5 percent.

The country produced 33.6 billion KWh and used 28.9 billion KWh during this period, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INS).
