Romania plans to build new type of nuclear reactor with EUR 1 bln in next 20 years

19 December 2013

Romania plans to build a new type of nuclear reactor at Mioveni, in Arges county. The investment, evaluated at some EUR 1 billion, will take place in the next 15 to 20 years. This is an European project, backed by the Government, which hopes to find the funding sources in the coming period, both domestic funds, and EU money.

The project will be run by the Institute for Nuclear research in Pitesti, the Arges county capital, together with Ansaldo Nucleare and ENEA.

Romania runs a nuclear power plat at Cernavoda, which has two operational nuclear reactors, U1 and U2. Ansaldo Nucleare has worked on these two nuclear reactors, and Romanian authorities hope they will have an important contribution for the third and fourth planned reactors.

Romania is currently trying to attract a foreign investor into building the remaining nuclear reactors at Cernavoda, after it failed to kick off the project via a consortium made of several large oil and gas companies, which ended up withdrawing from the project.
