Romania makes EUR 37 mln from green stamp, but has to return most of it

29 April 2014

Romania cashed in around EUR 36.8 million in the first quarter of the year from the environmental tax for cars, also called a ‘green stamp’. But the state would have to return most of this amount, or some EUR 22.2 million based on definitive court orders, according to Adrian Gearâp, president of the Environment Fund Administration, quoted by Agerpres.

Last year, the state made some EUR 162.8 million from the environmental stamp, and had to reimburse around EUR 126 million. The reimbursements were made to those who had paid previous versions of this tax, and in higher amounts.

The new environmental tax for cars was enforced in March 2013, and is calculated exclusively based on the car’s CO2 emissions, as mentioned in the car’s identity card, rather than the car’s age, as it was the case in the past.
