Romania exports bananas, imports honey and fresh eggs

Romania has exported thousands of tons of exotic fruits such as bananas, pineapples, coconuts, and avocados in the first seven months of the year, whereas it imported traditional products such as slanina (a sort of bacon), leek, mineral water, honey or even fresh eggs, according to official data from the National Statistics Institute (INS) cited by Adevarul.

Romania imports more food products than it exports. In the first seven months of the year, it imported food of EUR 3.13 billion and exported food of EUR 3.06 billion. The deficit amounted to almost EUR 70 million.

Romania actually imported onion, leek and garlic worth EUR 11.4 million, or carrots, turnips, beets worth EUR 11.8 million. It also exported bananas worth EUR 16.6 million, coconuts worth EUR 31 million, or pineapple and avocado worth EUR 145 million, even if no such fruits grow in Romania.
