Romania shuts down outdated power plants

04 March 2019

Romania's Government will cancel the operating licenses for power production facilities with a combined capacity of some 8,000MW of the country’s total 24,000MW, state secretary Doru Visan announced.

These are outdated capacities that practically no longer exist [can not be used] because of financial, environment or other causes, he explained, according to Economica.net.

Lifting their licenses is needed to encourage other investors to replace them. Keeping them on the list of viable capacities, which Romania reports to the EU, is detrimental to the country, the official argued. The process of closing down these capacities will start in April.

The closing down will generate redundancies among companies’ employees and will generate environmental costs as well, experts quoted by Adevarul daily explained. Poland closing down power plants with combined capacity of 5,800MW during 2013-2018 incurred costs of some USD 50 million per year, the experts said.
