Romanian Profi store manager says retailer sells expired meat

30 March 2016

The manager of a Profi store in Arad, western Romania, has claimed that his superiors had asked him to sell expired meat, washed with detergent and vinegar.

The man, called Ciprian Emanuel Gabor, refused to do it so he was fired, according to his own account. He contacted the Police, the Consumers’ Protection, and the Labor Inspectorate, reports local Digi24.

The man said that he made the complaint together with ten other employees of the same store.

“The zonal director criticized me for throwing the expired meat instead of selling it like in other Profi stores,” Gabor said.

He was also asked to change the labels of products that were close to expire.

Gabriel Paslaru, director of communication with Profi Romania, has denied that such practices have taken place. The authorities’ investigation will show the real situation, he said.
