Romania’s PM invites magistrates’ representatives to talks on justice laws

25 February 2019

Romania’s prime minister Viorica Dăncilă invited representatives of the Superior Magistracy Council (CSM) and of other magistrates' associations to talks on the justice laws and the emergency ordinances amending them.

The meeting is to take place on Monday, February 25, at 15:30, at Victoria Palace, local Adevarul reported.

The invitation came after magistrates in Romania announced protests after the Government adopted two emergency ordinances last week that brought new changes to the justice system. PM Dăncilă assured magistrates' associations of her cabinet’s full willingness to support all judiciary institutions in carrying out a fair act of justice, in observance with the fundamental rights of the citizens.

Several associations of magistrates already responded to the invitation on Sunday, warning the head of the government that the independence of justice is not negotiable and that the only solution at this moment is the immediate and complete abolition of the emergency ordinances.

“We reiterate that the Romanian Government and the Romanian Parliament have consistently refused to take into account the constitutional arguments and solutions to comply with the international conventions Romania has adhered to,” the release issued by three magistrates’ professional bodies and quoted by G4media.ro says.
