Romanian PM: Indoor restaurants will reopen as soon as epidemiological situation improves

19 August 2020

The Government will decide to reopen indoor restaurants in Romania as soon as the epidemiological situation improves, prime minister Ludovic Orban said on Tuesday, August 18.

Indoor restaurants have been closed in Romania for over three months and local restaurant and bar owners announced on Monday that they would start a series of protests against the restrictions. The first protest is scheduled for August 19, when all restaurants in Romania will suspend their activity for one hour (from 17:00 to 18:00).

“The only area in HORECA that is still under restriction is the indoor restaurant segment. As soon as we have a better epidemiological situation, we will allow the restaurants in closed spaces to resume their activity. It is not a matter of ill-will. Always when you are in such situations you have to choose between people's health and certain sacrifices that certain companies have to make,” PM Orban said on Tuesday, according to Economica.net.

Meanwhile, the representatives of companies in the HORECA sector claim that Romania is the only EU country where indoor restaurants are still closed and that the reopening of restaurants hasn’t led to a significant increase in COVID-19 infection cases in other countries.
