(P) The International British School of Bucharest prepares students to continue their education in the top ranked universities world wide

29 March 2019

As one of the best international schools in Bucharest, The International British School of Bucharest has a long history of sending its students to top universities around the world.

IBSB provides an educational environment where students are actively encouraged to strive for academic excellence. Every year IBSB has students graduating with an A-A* average across 3-5 A Level subjects, with 98% of students graduating from IBSB going on to study at higher education institutions both in Romania and around the world. Their graduates are regularly accepted into prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, Berklee College of Music, the New York Film Academy, UCL (University College London), LSE (London School of Economics), Cambridge University, and Yale, to name a few. You can see the full list of University Destinations here.

Here are a few examples of outstanding IBSB Alumni:

Alba Gavaliugov Méndez de Valdivia (Graduate Class of 2013) completed a Master degree in International Economics and Development at Paris Dauphine University as a precursor to a career in Politics, which has included most recently becoming the President of the World Harvard MUN 2019.

Alexandru Vlad (Graduate Class of 2012) choose to study Sociology at the University of Cambridge before joining Catena Pharmaceuticals as a member of their management team.

Dilara Yildiz (Graduate Class of 2017) is currently studying Oriental Languages at the University of Oxford.

Zoe Smarandoiu (Graduate Class of 2016) is currently studying Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Tobi Li, (Graduate Class of 2015) is currently completing his Master degree at UCL in Computer Engineering.

Ruxandra Rogojinaru (Graduate Class of 2015) choose to study her BA in History at the University of Cambridge and is now currently completing her Master degree at Queen Mary University of London in Regulation and Compliance.

Catrinel Craiu (Graduate Class of 2017) is currently studying Psychology at the Univeristy College London (UCL)

With so many of our graduates achieving academic and career success, the question to be asked is how does IBSB support students in choosing the right career and the right university?

The Path to Success: IBSB Career Support

With more than 22,000 universities in the world to choose from, including almost 5000 in the United States alone, students and parents can be forgiven for feeling a little overwhelmed when it comes to selecting the right university and course of study. This is even truer when we consider the statistic that over 50% of students do not end up working in a job or field directly related to their undergraduate degree.

It is important to understand that many courses, such as medicine, engineering, and even economics have prerequisites, meaning that if you do not take the right courses in high school, achieve the necessary grades, and in some cases offer proof of appropriate work experience, you will not be eligible for a given university course. These types of mistakes can be avoided if you select a school for your children which has a well-established ‘Career Support Programme’ in place, with experienced staff available to provide the necessary support and information along the way.

The Best Work Experience Programme in Bucharest

The International British School of Bucharest has perhaps one of the best established work experience programmes in Bucharest, working in close partnership with companies such as PwC, Deloitte, St Mary’s Hospital, The Sheraton Hotel, and Antenna 1, to name just a few, offering students two weeks of work experience in each of their final three years of high school.

For many IBSB students, this programme has helped them to select a future career. Sonia Savin, a recent IBSB graduate, is a good example of the positive effect a good work experience programme can have. Initially, Sonia intended to pursue a career in architecture, but following a two week work placement with B23T International Architectural Services, realised the career was not for her, so the following year she completed work placement with PwC, deciding instead on a career related to business support services, choosing to study economics at the London School of Economics, eventually returning to work for PwC as an intern.

University Application Support

Selecting the right university and completing your application to requires considerable knowledge to ensure your application has the best chance of being accepted. Parents and students at the International British School of Bucharest have access to extremely successful university application support programme, with counsellors who know the deadlines for applications for each country, and in some cases each university, the costs of studying at the various universities around the world, and application requirements. They are able to guide students through the application process, helping them write their personal statement, or essay, with valuable guidance for test preparation for any additional tests needed.
