New deadline for gondola lift in Romania’s Sinaia mountain resort

20 January 2016

The new gondola lift in Sinaia mountain resort, Prahova Valley, should be ready for opening in mid-February.

The new gondola lift, which will link the city’s Cota 1400 to Cota 2000, missed two deadlines already, one in mid-November and one in January. According to Vlad Oprea, the mayor of Sinaia, the delays have been caused by the bad weather.

“The opening will take place in February, but the exact time will be announced a week before. The work is almost done, but we still have to do the tests,” the mayor told local Digi24.

The new gondola required an investment of USD 10 million, for which the City Hall took bank loans. At present, the tourists can go up from Cota 1400 to Cota 2000 with the cable car or with the chairlift.

The gondola that links the mountain resort to Cota 1400 was inaugurated in 2007, after a total investment of EUR 7.7 million.

Sinaia is a mountain resort in Prahova county. It is a popular destination for hiking and winter sports. Some of its tourists landmarks are Peles Castle, Pelisor Castle, and Sinaia Monastery. About 150,000 tourists, 30% of whom are foreigners, come to Sinaia every year.
