More foreign tourists check in at Romanian hotels, guest houses in March

Romanian accommodation units welcomed 121,000 foreign tourists in March this year, most of whom came from other European countries. The number of foreign tourists was up 12 percent year-on-year, as recorded by Romanian accommodation units, according to the country’s Statistics Institute INS.

Meanwhile, 1.7 percent more foreigners entered Romania, as recorded at the border: 542,000, most of which came from European countries.

Most foreigners chose accommodation in Bucharest and in other county capital cities across Romania – 85 percent of them, while other localities and tourism tracks attracted 9.6 percent of foreign tourists in March this year.

Mountain resorts were chosen by 2.7 percent of them, down on 4.9 percent in March 2013, while spas, the seaside and the Danube Delta, most of which are off season, were chosen by less than 1 percent of foreign tourists.

In March this year, more Romanians went abroad – an increase of 6.3 percent year-on-year, to some 886,000. Most Romanians chose to leave the country by car – 71.6 percent.
