Media: Owner of club in Bucharest Old Town, suspect of murder and cover up by fire

04 July 2014

The owner of a club in Bucharest’s Old Town which burned down in late - June is suspected of having murdered the club manager and covering up the crime by setting fire to the first floor of the club’s building.

The Police only recently found the club manager’s body, more than two weeks after the fire. His body was covered in a bag and the Police believe this was in fact a quarrel between business partners. According to Mediafax, the man was killed somewhere else, and the killer burned down his body someplace else, then placed it in the building, after the fire was put out, to make it look like he had died in that fire.

According to ProTV, however, the man who was killed was named Nicu Stanciu, and was 45 years old. He owned a small bar and terrace in the Old Town and lived in the building behind the bar. The man, who is said to have owed money to other business people, disappeared on June 13. Several days later, the fire started in the Old Town, but the man’s body was only recently found.

The building that was on fire hosts two clubs at the ground floor, Elephant Pub and Selfie, both of which were affected. It is yet uncertain the owner of which of the two clubs was taken in by the Police for questioning.

Romanian media say prosecutors will take all suspects, including some people Stanciu was doing business with, for a re-enactment of the murder.

On June 18, when the fire started in the Old Town, it took firefighters two hours to put it out.
