Romania comes last in the European Union in terms of minimum and maximum salary paid to doctors, the latest statistics show, according to local business daily Zf.ro.

With a minimum wage of EUR 373 a month and a maximum of EUR 874, Romania is far behind other European countries, such as Denmark or Belgium. For example, Denmark offers doctors a minimum salary of over EUR 8,300 and a maximum wage of some EUR 13,300.

“For many years, the medical system in Romania has been underfinanced. The national budget is divided between political interests and other needs of our slow economy. Expenditures per capita are among the lowest in Europe. Medical staff work in insufficient teams and poorly maintained buildings,” said Zahal Levy, president of MediHelp International, quoted by Zf.ro.

Romania also comes last in the EU in terms of amounts allocated for expenditures in the medical system.
