Local company brings Canadian Second Cup cafe franchise to Romania

Local company Ruby Food, which owns the Ruby Tuesday restaurant franchise in Romania, has also brought Canadian brand Second Cup and plans to open a first such unit in Bucharest by the end of May. The first coffee shop under the brand Second Cup will be located in the Decebal area in the Romanian capital city.

Second Cup is a Canadian coffee retailer established in 1975. It has grown to more than 340 cafés across Canada and over 50 cafés internationally. The company, listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange, charges a royalty rate of 3 percent in the first year for franchised units, followed by a rate of 6 percent in the second year and then a rate of 9 percent in the third and following years.

In Romania, the Canadian brand enters a market shared by other international and local brands such as Starbucks, Gloria Jeans, Cafepedia, Turabo, Costa Coffee and Nescafe Milano, which has recently opened the first concept cafe in Bucharest, in the Romana Square.
