Former Moldovan PM to run on Romanian party’s list in European elections

28 March 2019

Former Moldovan prime minister Iurie Leanca, who is currently deputy prime minister in the Government of Pavel Filip, will run in the European Parliament elections on the ticket of Romanian party Pro Romania, led by former Romanian PM Victor Ponta, Deschide.md reported.

Ponta announced this in a TV show at Realitatea TV on March 26, and Pro Romania unveiled its list of candidates for the European Parliament on March 27.

Leanca served as PM of Moldova during 2013-2015, proposed by the Alliance for European Integration, and also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration after that. Currently, he heads the party he founded, the European Popular Party in Moldova.

Pro Romania's top four candidates will be Victor Ponta, Corina Cretu (European Commissioner), Mihai Tudose (former Prime Minister of Romania) and Iurie Leanca. According to recent polls, Pro Romania has between 8% and 10% of the intended vote, which would allow them to obtain three MEP mandates.

Victor Ponta announced that he would withdraw from the list, and the likely representatives of the party in the European Parliament would be Corina Cretu, Mihai Tudose and Iurie Leanca.
