Romania’s Government to reportedly publish food price bill on June 28

28 June 2023

The draft emergency ordinance (OUG) on capping the markups charged by food processors and retailers at 20% each will be published on June 28 by the Ministry of Agriculture for public consultations, according to sources familiar with the process consulted by News.ro.

The trademark is calculated based on all costs incurred by the food processor and the retailer, including the purchase of raw materials from farmers and processed food goods.

The bill covers a list of staple food, including white bread; fresh cow milk; cheese from cow milk; yoghurt; white wheat flour, corn/maize flour; chicken eggs; sunflower oil; fresh poultry; fresh pork; fresh vegetables; fresh fruit; fresh potatoes; and white sugar.

Some fees charged by retailers will be temporarily abrogated for the period when the bill is enforced, namely three months.

Currently, the markup for these products ranges between 10% and 45%, according to the sources.

The OUG draft may be on the agenda of the executive meeting on June 29, the sources also said.
