German retailer to sell eight stores in Romania

German retailer Rewe is negotiating the sale of eight stores it owns in Romania, which it has been operating under the XXL Mega Discount brand, according to market sources cited by local Ziarul Financiar.

The list of potential buyers include French retailers Auchan and Carrefour, as well as the Belgian group that owns Mega Image. Auchan has recently announced that it planned to enter the proximity retail sector.

Last year, Carrefour took over the Billa network from Rewe in a deal of almost EUR 100 million.

The XXL Mega Discount stores have an average area of 2,500 sqm. The units are located in big and medium cities, such as Braila, Brasov, Bucuresti, Targoviste, Sibiu, Galati, Buzau, and Ploiesti.
