Former Romanian President expects his party to reach 10% in elections

24 November 2016

Former President Traian Basescu, who is now the president of the Popular Movement Party (PMP), expects his party to get at least 10% of the votes in the parliamentary elections on December 11.

The party’s internal surveys show that the party hasn’t reached that level yet, Basescu said in an interview for local News.ro.

Regardless of the results, PMP considers that it’s “justified” to name the future prime minister, the former President said. He added that PMP will refuse any collaboration with the Social Democratic Party (PSD), but it leaves a door open for the National Liberal Party (PNL).

He also criticized the current prime minister Dacian Ciolos. Basescu said that Ciolos is not behaving honestly by not taking part in elections.

Ciolos said that he would not become a party member or run for Parliament, but asked the political parties to join a platform he created. PNL and the Save Romania Union (USR) have announced they would support Ciolos for a new mandate as Prime Minister.
