24 March 2015

The High Court sentenced former Defence Minister Corneliu Dobritoiu to one year in jail without parole, in the “Homes for Generals” case.

Prosecutors charged him for illegally acquiring a work apartment for a subsidized price.

Several other generals from the Defence Ministry received no-parole sentences, whereas other generals were acquitted, reports local Agerpres.

The Court ordered defendants to pay civil damages ranging from some RON 8,000 (EUR 1,804) to RON 280,100 (EUR 63,000) to the Defence Ministry.

Between 1999 and 2005, Traian Pigui, who was head of the Infrastructure Division within the Defence Ministry, illegally attributed work apartments to generals who bought them at subsidized prices. The Court acquitted Pigui. The total damage amounts to some EUR 270,000.
