Former mayor gets final jail time, no parole, for bribes, money laundry, forgery

The former mayor of Cluj – Napoca, in Central Romania, Sorin Apostu was recently sentenced to four years and six months in jail, no parole, for taking bribes, money laundry, and document forgery. The sentence is final.

Apostu initially got a three years and six months in jail, no parole, but the sentence was upped after appeal. The former mayor already served 10 months in jail between November 2011 and September 2012, which will be deducted from his sentence.

His wife was sentenced to three years in jail, but with parole, in the same file, and so was businessman Călin Stoian. Apostu took a EUR 94,000 bribe in exchange for closing contracts for car park insurance and sanitation.
