Foreign direct investments down while current account deficit drops in Romania

Foreign direct investments to Romania dropped by 28.7 percent in the first four months of this year, compared to the same period of 2010. The FDI volume reached EUR 444 million, according to data from the Romanian Central Bank (BNR). The investments covered 38.5 percent of the current account deficit in the country. Of the foreign investments, loans within the group amounted to EUR 324 million.

The current account deficit reached EUR 1.15 billion in the first four months of the year, down 46.4 percent on the same period in 2010. Foreign direct investments reached EUR 2.59 billion last year in Romania, a downwards trend of 25.6 percent compared to the previous year. The foreign investments covered half of the current account deficit in the country last year.
