Film review: Transformers, the “daddy” of block-buster movies

03 July 2014

The fourth movie of the Transformers franchise, Age of Extinction was by far the most relaxing movie that we’ve seen so far this year.

You will probably have heard many people saying that the fourth Transformers movie is scrap rather than shining steel, but I do not share their opinion. Maybe if you’re super relaxed and want to watch a good quality, emotion filled, award potential movie, you shouldn’t go to see Transformers, because you won’t like it.

The story is trite, or rather it’s a mix of stories which brings together elements of the most successful blockbuster movies released in recent or even past years. It has all the alien robot action which made the previous Transformers movies so successful.

It has the “daddy-buster” elements that made the Die Hard series so popular, with the good old American dad played by Mark Wahlberg. It has a bit of Iron Man’s high tech flavor, with Stanley Tucci playing the brilliant billionaire inventor who is both egotistical and funny.

You may even find some resemblances to the Terminator, to Godzilla, to Armageddon, but also to the old Jurassic Park. All blended and melted, and transformed by block-buster specialist Michael Bay into a brainwashing, relaxing movie. So if you go see the movie after a long stressful day at the office, on a Wednesday evening, like we did, you will get out of the cinema after more than two and a half hours completely relaxed and carefree.

With every fight scene you will feel the day’s problems shattering away, just like the steel pieces that Optimus Prime rips out of his enemies. The leader of the autobots is more badass than ever, but the other robot characters are more strongly personalized as well. You will have the surprise to discover John Goodman among the steel good guys adding to the humorous site of the movie.

All these being said, we really liked the movie (my wife liked it too ) so  we’re not sorry for having paid for the tickets. Which is why I’m not surprised that the movie already made USD 382 million gross sales worldwide in less than a week, which puts it in top 10 for this year.
