EU approves EUR 30 mln support for Romanian farmers affected by Ukrainian grain imports

27 June 2023

Member states of the European Union (EU) approved on June 26 the EUR 100 million support package for farmers in Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Slovakia - affected by the grain imports from Ukraine.

Romania is set to receive EUR 29.73 million, while the rest of the amount is to be split between Bulgaria - EUR 9.77 million, Hungary - EUR 15.93 million, Poland - EUR 39.33 million, and Slovakia - EUR 5.24 million.

“Farmers from these five Member States are facing issues related to logistical bottlenecks following large imports of certain agri-food products from Ukraine,” reads the EC press release.

“Exceptional and temporary preventive measures on imports of a limited number of products from Ukraine entered into force on May 2 and will be phased out by September 15, 2023. A Joint Coordination Platform is also working on improving the flow of trade between the European Union and Ukraine via the Solidarity Lanes,” the same source said.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Agriculture, the regulation allows the five countries to add additional grants of up to 200%, provided the payments do not distort the market or produce over-compensation. The payments should be made by December 31, 2023.
