Easter in numbers: Romanians spend EUR 5 mln to buy over 50 mln eggs

09 April 2014

Easter is an important celebration in Romania. For this special time of the year, Romanians are expected to buy 50 - 60 million eggs for which they are to pay some EUR 5 million, Ilie Van, the president of the Union of Poultry Breeders in Romania told local Mediafax.

“About 100 million eggs are sold in Romania each month. However, in April, because of Easter, egg sales go up to 150 - 160 million. Thus, the additional 50 to 60 million eggs are brought especially for Easter,” said Van.

He added that the eggs sold in stores have the same price as in March, of RON 0.45 - RON 0.50 (some EUR 0.1) per egg.

The most common Easter tradition in Romania is painting eggs. Most people boil the eggs and then place them in special egg paint found in most stores in Romania. There is also the tradition of multi-colored eggs, with complicated motifs, which vary from region to region.

Most Romanians however paint the eggs in one color, such as red, green, blue and yellow for Easter, while the special painted eggs are to be found at fairs and in some regions of the country, for example in Northern Moldova.
