Dragomirna monastery in Romania, among winners of the 2014 EU prize for cultural heritage

The European Commission and Europa Nostra announced the winners of the 2014 European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europa Nostra Awards.

The 27 laureates, chosen from 160 nominated projects across 30 countries, were honoured for achievements in four areas: conservation, research, dedicated service and education, training and awareness-raising.

Dragomirna monastery in Romania was one of the winners in the conservation category, together with other projects from Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain and UK.

Dragomirna monastery is a substantial, almost fortified, structure some 15 km from Suceava in northern Romania. More about the project here.

The award ceremony will take place on May 5 in Vienna under the patronage of the President of Austria, Heinz Fischer. Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, and Plácido Domingo, the opera singer and President of Europa Nostra, will jointly present the awards.

This year’s winners of the EU Prize for Cultural Heritage / Europa Nostra Awards join the 360 laureates recognised by the European Commission and Europa Nostra since 2002. The entire list of winners can be found here.
