French retailer Carrefour saw its sales in Romania at EUR 1 billion in 2013, up 2 percent on the year before, and back to the level it posted in 2008, its peak year in the country.

The retailer, which runs 162 units in Romania, including hypermarkets, supermarkets and neighborhood shops, reported its sales excluding VAT in Romania, according to its most recent report.

In 2012, sales in Romania were of EUR 989 million.

Romania continued to be the smallest market in terms of sales for Carrefour, one eighth the size of the Spain market, one fifth of the Italian market, and almost half the Polish market within Carrefour's chain.

In its home country France, Carrefour posted revenues of EUR 35.4 billion in 2013, similarly to 2012. Taiwan was the second to last market in terms of size, with sales of EUR 1.4 billion in 2013. However, Taiwan has 69 shops, most of which hypermarkets. In Romania, Carrefour runs 25 hypermarkets in Romania, 81 supermarkets, and 56 convenience stores, according to its most recent data.
