Austrian, French, Greek banks dominate Romania's banking system

Foreign banks dominate Romania’s banking market, reaching over 90% of the total banking assets at the end of 2014.

Austrian credit institutions rank first with a 36.7% share, followed by French banks (13.3%) and those with Greek capital (12.4%), according to the Central Bank’s annual report for 2014.

The parent banks’ exposure to their Romanian subsidiaries dropped by 16% in 2014. In contrast, the deposits attracted from the local market, which are the banks’ main financing source, kept their upward trend, increasing by 7.3%.

The size of the Romanian banking system remains relatively small compared to other EU member states. The volume of gross banking assets went down by EUR 762 million in 2014, to EUR 91 billion. The ratio of gross banking assets to the GDP stood at 60.8%, below the EU average.
