Audit finds EUR 55 mln financial irregularities in EU projects in Romania

State institutions and private beneficiaries that have carried out projects with European funds in Romania were subject to financial irregularities of almost EUR 55 million in 2013.

The Audit Authority within the Romanian Court of Accounts found these irregularities after checking 25.6% of the total declared spending to the European Commission for reimbursement in 2013, reports local Hotnews.ro.

The Authority checked over 2,260 projects, contracts and measures financed from European funds, over 650 public and private companies and 1,450 acquisition procedures worth over EUR 3.3 billion.

In 2013, Romania received from the European Commission EU funds worth over EUR 5.5 billion and it contributed with EUR 1.53 billion to the EU budget.
