Turkish Airlines chooses Romanian airport as bad weather backup

10 April 2015

Turkish Airlines has chosen an airport in Western Romania as its backup airport in case of bad weather, it announced.

The airline chose the Traian Vuia airport in the western Romanian city of Timisoara as a redirect location for its airplanes that will not be able to land at the Belgrade airport. This would most likely be due mainly to bad weather, according to Mediafax newswire.

Turkish Airlines chose Timisoara due to its excellent infrastructure: a 3.5 km runway which can allow for the landing of any type of airline, as well as a light signaling system plus high class radio navigation for landing under limited visibility conditions. Timisoara is also just 160 km away from Belgrade.

Other airlines use the Timisoara airport as a backup: Air Serbia, Etihad Airways, Lufthansa, Wizz Air and the local Tarom.
