Rosia Montana Gold Corporation wants talks between Romanian President and PM

21 January 2015

Gabriel Resources, the majority shareholder in the Rosia Montana Gold Corporation (RMGC) gold mining project in Romania, has sent a formal notification to the country's President and Prime Minister asking for a consultation process to kick off project, according to a company's release.

The press release further reads that RMGC wants this dialog so that the "authorization of the mining project in Rosia Montana can progress".

It also shows that the parent company Gabriel Resources wants to avoid an international arbitration.

"If Gabriel does not obtain a satisfactory solution, it is ready to present its claims to an international arbitration court,” according to the press release.

Romania postponed without a due date the authorization for the mining project in Rosia Montana, after massive protests took place across the country in 2013.

President Klaus Iohannis often addressed the issue during the election campaign, saying in an interview that "you cannot mock a country's resource and come up with a mechanism that brings great environmental problems."
