Romania's Competition Council imposed last year fines of EUR 41.5 million, more than double compared to 2013 and 6 times higher than in 2012.

It sanctioned 53 companies, with 80% of the sanctions applied for vertical agreements. These are agreements between firms at different levels of the supply chain.

The average length of investigations which the institution completed in 2014 was 3.7 years, according to its annual report.

Some 16% of the sanctions referred to horizontal agreements and 0.38% were for non-compliance of commitments.

In 2014, the Competition Council completed 21 investigations, 16 of them referring to possible breaches of competition law.
