Romanian railway freight operator wins contract to carry salt

13 March 2015

State-owned railway freight operator CFR Marfa has won the tender organized by the National Salt Company Salrom to transport salt between Romania and Hungary.

The three-year contract provides that CFR Marfa will carry between 300,000 - 400,000 tonnes of salt annually, reports local Capital.ro.

CFR Marfa, which has a 57.2% market share, posted a EUR 212 million turnover in 2014.

In February this year, Transport Minister Ioan Rus said that the state was not in a hurry to privatize CFR Marfa, because it wants to get a good price for it.

Last year, the private railway freight operator Grup Feroviar Roman (GFR) bought a 51% stake in CFR Marfa for EUR 202 million, but it failed to pay.
