Romanian Police officers join Polish, British colleagues to patrol London streets

07 January 2015

Eight Romanian Police officers will join the Metropolitan Police and patrol the streets of London starting January 7, aiming to help reduce the number of crime committed by East Europeans. This is part of an operation called Nexus. The eight Romanians specialize in criminal investigations and in fighting organized crime. They will join several Polish counterparts with a similar task. Their target is to prevent and combat shoplifting, home theft, pickpocketing, prostitution, and black labor.

It is not the first time a team of Romanian Police officers join the Nexus program – such teams were sent to UK throughout 2014, as well as in 2013, when they help identify and arrest Romanian nationals who committed crimes, as well as select and translate documents needed in investigations.

The UK has been complaining about increasing number of Romanians and Bulgarians arriving in the country ever since work restrictions were lifted in the beginning of 2014. There was a big media campaign in the UK against Romanians, as the British feared they would take on their jobs, or live off social benefits.
