Romanian Parliament in talks with IMF and National Bank about Swiss Francs loans

04 February 2015

The Romanian Parliament’s finance and budget committees will meet next Monday with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) representatives and next Tuesday with the Romanian National Bank (BNR) board to talk about the loans in Swiss Francs (CHF).

The deputies already met to discuss this, but couldn’t reach a solution.

The committees' members will vote on a resolution on the possible conversion of CHF loans, following these meetings, said Stefan Viorel, president of the budget committee within the Chamber of Deputies, cited by local Mediafax.

BNR representatives earlier said that they favor a scenario in which banks and customers separately negotiate each case, to find ways to reduce the financial burden, agreed by the both parts.

BNR has not agreed so far with a law that imposes loan conversion at the original exchange rate. This solution would generate almost EUR 1 billion in losses for the banking sector, BNR has calculated.
