Romania to face abnormal freeze this winter, official document discovered by media reveals

12 November 2013

An official document cited by Romanian news agency Mediafax has warned of abnormally cold weather in Romania this winter, but Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta said no such document had reached his office.

According to Romanian media, the document is an emergency ordinance draft, requiring the transfer of funds to city halls across Romania to cover the costs arising from a heavier then expected winter in Romania.

The PM, however, said that he asked the National Meteorology Administration and that 'there is no freeze coming for the time being.'

The document notes the expected increase in electricity and thermal energy consumption during winter in Romania, warning there’s a risk local authorities won’t be able to supply the needed stocks.

“I know nothing of this project. I only get them when they are final. From where do you have this project? ,” the Romanian Prime Minister asked the journalists who had raised the questions.

“As usual, you find out from clerks information which has not yet reached the Government,” the PM concluded.

Romania experienced heavy snow last winter, as a cold wave which hit the whole Central and Eastern Europe, brought low temperatures to the region.
