Romania, not in a hurry to sell railway freight company CFR Marfa

09 February 2015

The state is not in a hurry to privatize the railway freight company CFR Marfa, because it wants to get a good price for it, said the Transport Minister Ioan Rus.

“At the last privatization attempt, CFR Marfa received state aid. It had been given during the whole process. The privatization failed in the first instance, so it will be repeated,” the Minister added, cited by local Digi24.

“It’s the same as for young ladies. It doesn’t happen when the girl wants to marry, but when a guy wants to marry her. I don’t want to sell CFR Marfa tomorrow morning,” Rus said.

The private railway freight operator Grup Feroviar Roman (GFR) bought a 51% stake in CFR Marfa last year for EUR 202 million, but it failed to pay. This happened because the state had not met all the conditions in the contract, said GFR’s owner.
