Bio products trend makes Romania the largest corn exporter to the US

16 April 2015

Romania has exported 20 times more corn to the US in a year, as the US is trying to cope with increasing demand for bio products and for non-genetically modified crops.

These products are however used to feed farm animals, but farmers in the US no longer want to use genetically modified products, according to Bloomberg, quoting the Organic Trade Association. This happens despite the US being the largest corn producer in the world. However, most of the crop - 80% - represents genetically modified produce.

Last year, the US imported some USE 11.6 million worth of corn from Romania, 20 times more than in 2013. It also imported soy from India, worth some USD 73.8 million, double on 2013. Romania is the largest exporter of corn to the US, followed by Turkey, the Netherlands, and Canada.

The bio products market is growing by 10% a year in the US, three times faster than the total food sales increase. Still, this is a small market in the US.
