Romanian senator proposal: Half of supermarket meat, fruits, vegetables should be local

11 March 2015

A Romanian senator has come up with a draft proposal that makes it mandatory for supermarkets and hypermarkets to choose local products for 51% of the meat, fruits, and vegetables they sell.

Otherwise, retailers could get EUR 5,600 to EUR 11,000 fines, reports local Mediafax.

During winter months, however, import fruits and vegetables could stand for 70% of their offer. T

his law would allow local producers better access to the market.

The senator who proposed the draft decided for a 51% quota so that supermarkets can still have flexibility in their supply decisions.
