Opposition union co-president: Romanian border officials should be foreign, to solve confidence issues

26 September 2011

Victor Ponta (in picture), the co-president of the opposition union USL and president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), said Romania should have Dutch, Danish, French or English officials at the borders to deal with the problem of confidence.” We need to understand what happened, to stop lying to ourselves that we meet the technical criteria, but I don't know why the Governments of the Netherlands and Finland don't want us,”, said victor Ponta. His statement comes after Romania’s Schengen entry has been further delayed.

The Romanian President Traian Basescu said, during a TV show, that he takes full responsibility for the fact that Romania’s Schengen entry was delayed, given that the institutions have fulfilled their tasks.

The Netherlands-Romanian Chamber of Commerce (NRCC) has expressed its support of Romania’s joining the Schengen area, but has asked the Romanian state to enforce non-discriminatory controls and not target any specific industry or business community.
