Low yields on crops in Romania due to lack of fertilizers

27 February 2015

Romanian farmers get low yields on crops because they don’t use fertilizers, agri-specialists say.

Production could double if farmers used phosphorus and potassium as fertilizers, besides nitrogen, reports local Capital.ro.

Romania has an area of 9.45 million hectares of arable land, which could bring record yields. However, this does not happen, as farmers don’t use the appropriate fertilizers.

In fact, the amount of fertilizers has dropped in the last ten years, and so has production. Between 1980 and 1990 the average yield of wheat amounted to 3 tonnes per hectare, whereas the wheat yield now reaches 2.7 tonnes per hectare.
